Our Firm

Alan Priest

Alan's Story

I completed my legal training in Grafton and was admitted as a Solicitor in 1972. After practising in Grafton and Sydney I came to Port Macquarie on a surfing trip in 1974 and stayed. I became principal of the firm in 1976 and named it Priests. We moved into the current Priest Legal premises at 41 Hay Street in 1978 and the firm has been here under various names ever since.

We have seen many changes in legislation and the way legal services are delivered over that time. My guiding rule has always been to deliver the best service for our clients. The practice continues to maintain those high standards today thanks to our committed, skilled and diverse team.

The House

The Port Macquarie premises of Priest Legal are an integral part of our identity as a firm – built to last.

Originally constructed as the home of Mr John Hayward and his family in 1888 and extended in 1936, the building retains many period features. In 1888 it was described in the Port Macquarie News as:

“The prettiest and most comfortable building in Port Macquarie ... commanding a beautiful view of the whole surrounds” featuring “lofty, large and well ventilated rooms” reached through “doors of stained glass which look exceedingly elegant”.

The house and its long history provide a pleasant counterpoint to the busy activity of a modern legal practice, and the firm is justifiably proud to occupy and maintain one of Port Macquarie’s most historic buildings.
